Driving to see an exhibition of Frederic Church paintings of Mediterranean ruins at the Detroit Institute of Art, I passed through the decaying neighborhoods of downtown Detroit. At day's end, reviewing my photos from the day's excursion, I was struck by the parallel scenes of ruin: Church's romanticized ruins from antiquity, and the reality of a once-vital American city falling into decay. I couldn't escape the obvious question: Are we too an empire in decline?
In my mind and on my cell camera, the two realities became one. Here are photo-montages made entirely on the iPhone 7.
